Background:

Whilst human capital is considered as an important asset and the backbone for any organization, quality human capital and high service standards are vital ingredients for the success and continued growth of a service industry like tourism. The success of a tourism destination is determined not only by price competitiveness or the range of attractions available but also by the quality of the human capital and services provided. However, difficulty in attracting and retaining quality and skilled manpower, high turnover rate and mis-match between training & development and industry requirements have been some of the ongoing challenges affecting the tourism sector especially in the hotels, restaurants, travel & tour agencies and a few other related organizations.

PATA Tourism Career Fair 2017:

In recognizing the above needs and challenges, PATA Malaysia Chapter (PMC) supported by the Ministry of Tourism and Culture (MOTAC), Malaysia and Tourism Malaysia and in collaboration with several Universities & Colleges offering tourism and hospitality programmes in Malaysia, held its fourth Tourism Career Fair on 11 November 2017 at the Berjaya Times Square Hotel, Kuala Lumpur, with the theme ‘Today’s talent, Tomorrow’s success’.

PATA MALAYSIA-SINGAPORE INTER-CHAPTER MEET &

NETWORKING SESSION WITH LANGKAWI TOURISM PLAYERS

DATE: 28-31 JULY 2017

VENUE: BERJAYA LANGKAWI RESORT, LANGKAWI, KEDAH

1. Background:

PMC organised the first Inter-Chapter Networking Session with Singapore and Thailand on 05 August 2016 at the Lexis Hibiscus, Port Dickson, Malaysia.

In moving forward and to complement the efforts of PATA head office in reactivating      inter-chapter relationships, PMC had originally planned to organise a first-ever PATA ASEAN Inter-Chapter Meeting/Networking which was scheduled for 28-31 July 2017 in Langkawi, Malaysia. The event was opened to all the 11 PATA Chapters within the ASEAN region.

However, despite the initial positive support from most Chapters for the proposed event, only Singapore Chapter was able to confirm participation, whilst the rest of the Chapters   had subsequently encountered some challenges in securing participants for the event.

In this regard, PMC has converted the event to a PATA Malaysia-Singapore Inter-Chapter Meet, followed by a Networking Session with Langkawi Tourism Players.

Langkawi was specifically selected as the venue for the event to promote the island as a top-of-mind tourist destination and to update the delegates, particularly those from abroad,            on its latest tourism developments and facilities. Moreover, Langkawi has been selected as the host venue for the 2018 PATA Travel Mart in September.

2. PATA Malaysia-Singapore Inter-Chapter Meet &

Networking Session with Langkawi Tourism Players:

2.1      PATA Malaysia-Singapore Inter-Chapter Meet:

The PATA Malaysia-Singapore Inter-Chapter Meet was held on 29 July 2017 at the Berjaya Langkawi Resort, Langkawi with the objectives to exchange chapter updates, share best practices/success stories including future plans and to explore avenues to enhance inter-chapter relationships through joint programmes. A total of 27 delegates from Malaysia, Singapore and PATA head office attended the Inter-Chapter Meet.

Notwithstanding the limited participation from the ASEAN Chapters, the event was a great success. Besides exchanging chapter updates and sharing success stories, the session    also addressed some of the common challenges and developments affecting the chapters’ relevance and initiatives. The session therefore acknowledged the current realities and the need to re-position, transform and explore new strategies and value proposition to remain relevant within the tourism and hospitality industries and contribute value and benefits to members and’ other relevant stakeholders. The session also recognised the need to secure involvement and participation by youths/students, who are the future leaders of the tourism and hospitality industry, in the chapters and related programmes/activities.

PMC will continue to initiate such inter-chapter sessions in the near future and as suggested by some delegates, will take note of the appropriate timing (offpeak) and also to consider co-inciding such programmes with relevant industry forums/events in neighbouring countries, to facilitate and encourage greater participation from the ASEAN chapters.

2.2      Networking Session with Langkawi Tourism Players:

In conjunction with the Inter-Chapter Meet, PMC in collaboration with Langkawi Development Authority (LADA), held a Networking Session with the Langkawi Tourism Players on 30 July 2017. The session, aimed at providing a platform for tourism and travel trade players from outside Langkawi to meet up and network with Langkawi’s tourism players to forge closer relationships and enhance business opportunities, saw an overwhelming response of close to 100 participants.

The presentations by Langkawi Development Authority (LADA) and other key product suppliers namely Berjaya Langkawi Resort, Panorama Langkawi and NAAM provided an excellent insight on Langkawi and the various facilities and products/attractions.

3. Half-Day Sightseeing Tours:

The half-day sightseeing tours arranged by LADA In collaboration with Langkawi Tourism Association (LTA) which covered the Craft Complex, Sky Cab, Sky Bridge, 3D Art Museum, Paradise 101 and a trip on Sunset Cruise provided a splendid opportunity for the Inter-Chapter delegates to physically view and experience some of the product offerings of Langkawi.

PATA MALAYSIA CHAPTER (PMC) TOURISM CAREER FAIR 2016

 Background:

As a service industry, tourism is heavily dependent on the quality of the human workforce. Growing the human workforce for the tourism sector is very crucial for the success of the tourism industry. Often the key challenges faced by the tourism industry include the difficulty in attracting and retaining quality staff, particularly in the hotel and a few other related sectors. Many perceive jobs in tourism as a short-term opportunity and only a few recognize the long term prospects. Many also perceive the jobs in tourism as purely tourism-related and fail to realize that the tourism sector just like any other organization, also provides for a range of job positions such as marketing, administration, finance, engineering etc.

PATA Tourism Career Fair 2016:

In recognizing the above needs and challenges, PATA Malaysia Chapter (PMC) supported by the Ministry of Tourism and Culture (MOTAC), Malaysia and Tourism Malaysia and in collaboration with several Universities & Colleges offering tourism and hospitality programmes in Malaysia, held its third Tourism Career Fair on 06 November 2016 at the Seri Pacific Hotel Kuala Lumpur, with the theme ‘Today’s talent, Tomorrow’s success’.

The Career Fair was officially launched by Y.Brs. Dr. Junaida Lee Abdullah, Deputy Secretary General, Ministry of Tourism and Culture Malaysia.

The Career Fair was aimed at connecting fresh graduates and graduates from the tourism and hospitality faculties of the various universities & colleges in Malaysia with the potential employers (corporate organizations) from the tourism and hospitality sector under one roof.

Tourism Career Forum:

In conjunction with the Tourism Career Fair, PMC also arranged a Tourism Career Forum to share knowledge and inputs on tourism that would be of interest and benefit to the student participants. Prominent speakers from the tourism, airline, hotel, and travel and tour industries shared their insights, views and recommendations on the topic “Today’s talent, Tomorrow’s success: Successful Career Equation for New Generation Employees” from the perspective of their related industries.

The panel for the Tourism Career Forum comprised the following individuals:

Moderator        :

Y.Bhg. Dato’ Haji Azizan Noordin

Past Chairman, PATA Malaysia Chapter

Panelists          :

Ms Ivy Chan

Mr David Raj

Head of Sales, Malindo Air

Y.Bhg. Dato’ Michiel David

President, Chef Association of Malaysia

Brand Showcase Presentations:

The programme for the event also included Brand Showcase presentations by Lexis Hotels & Resorts Sdn. Bhd., Dorsett Hospitality International, Boustead Hotels & Resorts Sdn. Bhd and Ratu Oceania Raya (M) Sdn. Bhd.

Outcome of the Career Fair 2016:

The Fair attracted a total of close to 1500 graduate students from 20 over universities & colleges in Malaysia and 22 exhibitors from the tourism and hospitality sector which included hotels, convention centres, travel/tour agents and other organisations connected with the tourism and hospitality industry.

Overall, the Fair was a great success and provided an excellent platform for the student participants to explore the career opportunities in the tourism and hospitality industry related to their qualification and skills. For the participating exhibitors, it also provided an excellent avenue and opportunity to network, showcase their organisations and career opportunities available, as well as to attract the best talent/qualified candidates for full-time and part-time career opportunities and internship programmes.

Dear PMC Members,
Once again, Selamat Hari Raya to all Muslim member delegates and staff. Presume most of you have had a good festive break and back to business now.

This has reference to the PATA Inter-Chapter Dialogue & Networking Session with Singapore and Thailand Chapters scheduled for 05-06AUG 2016 at Lexis Hibiscus, Port Dickson.

So far, PMC had issued 3 notifications on the event on 15JUN, 23JUN and 02JUL and this is the 4th reminder, seeking your kind support and participation. Whilst we have received a few confirmations and a few negative responses, most of the PMC members have still not responded, possibly due to your busy schedules, festive break  or had inadvertently over looked our earlier emails.

For your information, PMC had initiated this Inter-chapter meet, which is a first time effort and had proceeded to invite the Singapore and Thailand Chapters, based on the confidence and trust that our own PMC members will reflect interest and enthusiasm on such inter-chapter programmes.

Singapore Chapter has given an initial confirmation for 8 participants whilst Thailand is in the process of finalising their list of participants. For the dialogue/networking session to be more meaningful and achieve its desired objectives, we are looking forward to at least around 20-25 participants from PMC.

If the cost is an issue, we would wish to recap that the normal accommodation cost at Lexis Hibiscus which is a new resort, averages around RM700 per night. However, for the benefit of this programme and to encourage chapter members participation, and based on preferential rates secured, the participation fee has been very reasonably packaged at RM720 (Single occupancy) which cover accommodation with B/F, meeting package with lunch and networking coffee break, a welcome dinner and also a day tour to Malacca.

We would appreciate receiving your confirmation via email latest by 15JUL 2016. Based on your confirmation, we will email you the registration form with the payment process.

Warm regards/GP Subra
