DATE: 28-31 JULY 2017

1. Background:

PMC organised the first Inter-Chapter Networking Session with Singapore and Thailand on 05 August 2016 at the Lexis Hibiscus, Port Dickson, Malaysia.

In moving forward and to complement the efforts of PATA head office in reactivating      inter-chapter relationships, PMC had originally planned to organise a first-ever PATA ASEAN Inter-Chapter Meeting/Networking which was scheduled for 28-31 July 2017 in Langkawi, Malaysia. The event was opened to all the 11 PATA Chapters within the ASEAN region.

However, despite the initial positive support from most Chapters for the proposed event, only Singapore Chapter was able to confirm participation, whilst the rest of the Chapters   had subsequently encountered some challenges in securing participants for the event.

In this regard, PMC has converted the event to a PATA Malaysia-Singapore Inter-Chapter Meet, followed by a Networking Session with Langkawi Tourism Players.

Langkawi was specifically selected as the venue for the event to promote the island as a top-of-mind tourist destination and to update the delegates, particularly those from abroad,            on its latest tourism developments and facilities. Moreover, Langkawi has been selected as the host venue for the 2018 PATA Travel Mart in September.

2. PATA Malaysia-Singapore Inter-Chapter Meet &

Networking Session with Langkawi Tourism Players:

2.1      PATA Malaysia-Singapore Inter-Chapter Meet:

The PATA Malaysia-Singapore Inter-Chapter Meet was held on 29 July 2017 at the Berjaya Langkawi Resort, Langkawi with the objectives to exchange chapter updates, share best practices/success stories including future plans and to explore avenues to enhance inter-chapter relationships through joint programmes. A total of 27 delegates from Malaysia, Singapore and PATA head office attended the Inter-Chapter Meet.

Notwithstanding the limited participation from the ASEAN Chapters, the event was a great success. Besides exchanging chapter updates and sharing success stories, the session    also addressed some of the common challenges and developments affecting the chapters’ relevance and initiatives. The session therefore acknowledged the current realities and the need to re-position, transform and explore new strategies and value proposition to remain relevant within the tourism and hospitality industries and contribute value and benefits to members and’ other relevant stakeholders. The session also recognised the need to secure involvement and participation by youths/students, who are the future leaders of the tourism and hospitality industry, in the chapters and related programmes/activities.

PMC will continue to initiate such inter-chapter sessions in the near future and as suggested by some delegates, will take note of the appropriate timing (offpeak) and also to consider co-inciding such programmes with relevant industry forums/events in neighbouring countries, to facilitate and encourage greater participation from the ASEAN chapters.

2.2      Networking Session with Langkawi Tourism Players:

In conjunction with the Inter-Chapter Meet, PMC in collaboration with Langkawi Development Authority (LADA), held a Networking Session with the Langkawi Tourism Players on 30 July 2017. The session, aimed at providing a platform for tourism and travel trade players from outside Langkawi to meet up and network with Langkawi’s tourism players to forge closer relationships and enhance business opportunities, saw an overwhelming response of close to 100 participants.

The presentations by Langkawi Development Authority (LADA) and other key product suppliers namely Berjaya Langkawi Resort, Panorama Langkawi and NAAM provided an excellent insight on Langkawi and the various facilities and products/attractions.

3. Half-Day Sightseeing Tours:

The half-day sightseeing tours arranged by LADA In collaboration with Langkawi Tourism Association (LTA) which covered the Craft Complex, Sky Cab, Sky Bridge, 3D Art Museum, Paradise 101 and a trip on Sunset Cruise provided a splendid opportunity for the Inter-Chapter delegates to physically view and experience some of the product offerings of Langkawi.
