Report on Malaysia Tourism Council – PATA Malaysia Chapter Crisis Communication Management Workshop 2016

As part of the programmes lined up for 2016, PATA Malaysia Chapter (PMC), in collaboration with Malaysia Tourism Council (MTC), held a Crisis Communication Management Workshop on 17 March 2016 at the Pacific Ballroom, Seri Pacific Hotel Kuala Lumpur. The theme for the Workshop was ‘ Protecting the assets and the reputation of the tourism industry’

This one-day Workshop was targeted at owners and senior executives of all stakeholders of the tourism industry which included hospitality, tour operators, tourism authorities, trade associations and other tourism service providers.

The Workshop basically focused on the area of communication which is the crux of the shortcomings in most crisis situations. It covered the many principles of good communications, and participants were able to learn about the various paradigms which can help them to take charge of the next crisis and also on how to develop specific plans for foreseeable types of crises and generic plans for broad categories of unpredictable crises.

In order for the Workshop to be more effective and beneficial in achieving the desired results, both PMC and MTC had invited participation from the following category of personnel from the tourism stakeholders :

Company Directors/Chief Executive Officers/Chief Operation Officers//Chief Financial Officers/ Chief Marketing Officers/Senior Executives from Safety, Security and Marketing Communications.

The programme eventually took off successfully and attracted a total of close to 100 delegates for the Workshop.

The Workshop was officially launched by PMC Chairman Y.Bhg. Dato’ Hj. Azizan Noordin with a welcome address, and YM Tunku Dato’ Seri Iskandar Tunku Abdullah (Founder Chairman of National Tourism Council Malaysia) wrapped up the session with his closing remarks.

The Facilitator for the Workshop was Mr Bert van Walbeek, who is a crisis management expert from PATA Head Office, with over 50 years of experience in the tourism and hospitality sectors and active involvement and wide exposure in crisis management, including developing recovery strategies and action plans.

The Organising Committee for this event comprised Encik Kamaruddin Baharin (The Royale Bintang KL) as the Chairman and supported by Y.Bhg. Datuk M. Ali (Hon. Secretary/Co-Chairman), Mr Aruldas (Hon. Treasurer), Mr Manmohan Singh (MAB), Mr Teddy Low (Flexiroam), Ms Azizah Aziz & Ms Sarafena Adam (Tourism Malaysia) and representing Malaysia Tourism Council (MTC) were Encik Taib Wahab & Encik Abdul Halim. A total of five (5) meetings were held to organize this event.
